Red Yeast Rice May Lower Cholesterol, So Why Isn’t Your Doctor Recommending It?

By NANCY WALSH, MedPage Today Staff Writer

Oct. 25, 2010
Researchers have found wide variations in the amount of active compounds known as monacolins -- related to prescription drugs called statins -- in different brands of the popular dietary supplement red yeast rice.

Independent testing found that levels of total monacolins in 12 brands of red yeast rice ranged from 0.31 mg to 11.15 mg per capsule, according to Dr. Ram Y. Gordon, of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and colleagues.

TESTS OF TEN RED YEAST RICE SUPPLEMENTS BY CONSUMERLAB.COM REVEAL SIGNIFICANT STATIN LEVELS, BUT SOME PILLS CONTAMINATED

Popular Cholesterol-Lowering Supplements Compared in New Report

WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK — JULY 1, 2008ConsumerLab.com announced today that its tests of ten red yeast rice supplements revealed levels of cholesterol-lowering statin compounds varying by more than 100-fold, with some supplements providing as much as prescription medication and others containing very little. A potentially toxic contaminant, citrinin, was found in four of the products, with highest levels in a supplement sold by a national pharmacy chain.

Red yeast rice naturally contains the cholesterol-lowering statin compound lovastatin, the active ingredient in prescription Mevacor. Labels on red yeast rice products, however, generally do not disclose their lovastatin content due to concern that the supplement will be considered a drug by the FDA and removed from the market. This makes it difficult for consumers and doctors to assess and compare red yeast rice supplements, although they remain widely used.

June 17, 2009 -- By some estimates, as many as 10% of people who take cholesterol-lowering statins experience troubling muscle pain, and many stop taking the drugs because of it.

Now a new study suggests that a dietary supplement sold in nutrition centers and grocery stores may be a useful alternative to statins for some.

What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol or trans-resveratrol as it is sometimes called a phytoalexin which is naturally produced by a variety of plants when under attack by pathogens like bacteria or fungi. Resveratrol is also produced through chemical synthesis from Japanese knotweed. Resveratrol has also been discovered in the skin of red grapes and is also a constituent of red wine
What does resveratrol do?

Resveratrol may help prevent diseases and other age-related deterioration. In studies performed on lab mice, researchers have found that resveratrol may have several positive health effects including: Preventing heart disease Preventing Type 2 diabetes preventing certain types of cancer, including prostate and breast cancer Preventing Alzheimer's Increasing bone health counteracting a high-fat diet aiding in weight loss Increasing life span

Red wine was believed to be associated with heart health and connected to the healthier diets of Mediterranean peoples. This included the French who like Americans, consume fattier foods but have less heart disease. Resveratrol is the link to the benefits of drinking red wine.

Vitamin B12 with Folic Acid Lozenges vitamin-B12 supplements

Vitamin B12

Learn more about Vitamin B-12 supplements
Vitamin B12 with Folic Acid Lozenges vitamin-B12 supplements

Vitamin B12 also called cobalamin, is a water soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of blood. It is one of the eight B vitamins. It is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also fatty acid synthesis and energy production. As the largest and most structurally complicated vitamin, it can be produced industrially only through bacterial fermentation-synthesis.

Vitamin B12 consists of a class of chemically-related compounds (vitamers), all of which have vitamin activity. It contains the biochemically rare element cobalt. Biosynthesis of the basic structure of the vitamin in nature is only accomplished by simple organisms such as some bacteria and algae, but conversion between different forms of the vitamin can be accomplished in the human body.

A common synthetic form of the vitamin, cyanocobalamin, does not occur in nature, but is used in many pharmaceuticals and supplements, and as a food additive, due to its stability and lower cost. In the body it is converted to the physiological forms, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin, leaving behind the cyanide, albeit in minimal concentration. More recently, hydroxocobalamin (a form produced by bacteria), methylcobalamin, and adenosylcobalamin can also be found in more expensive pharmacological products and food supplements. The utility of these is presently debated.

Historically, vitamin B12 was discovered from its relationship to the disease pernicious anemia, which is an autoimmune disease that destroys parietal cells in the stomach that secrete intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is crucial for the normal absorption of B12, so a lack of intrinsic factor, as seen in pernicious anemia, causes a vitamin B12 deficiency. Many other subtler kinds of vitamin B12 deficiency and their biochemical effects have since been elucidated.

Resveratrol Protects Brain After A Stroke

Resveratrol Protects Brain After A Stroke

Scientists from John Hopkins University recently published their findings in a study on lab mice that showed resveratrol may shield the brain from the negative affects of a stroke. The researchers, lead by Dr Sylvain Dore, state that it may not be resveratrol that is inhibiting the brain damage directly, but it may actually be activating the cells to defend themselves from the free radical damage that often follows a stroke

Red wine compound increases anti-tumor effect of rapamycin

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/02/110214142335.htm

ScienceDaily (2011-02-14) -- Researchers have discovered that resveratrol -- a compound found in red wine -- when combined with rapamycin can have a tumor-suppressing effect on breast cancer cells that are resistant to rapamycin alone. The research also indicates that the PTEN tumor-suppressing gene contributes to resveratrol's anti-tumor effects in this treatment combination.
