Researchers have found wide variations in the amount of active compounds known as monacolins -- related to prescription drugs called statins -- in different brands of the popular dietary supplement red yeast rice.
Independent testing found that levels of total monacolins in 12 brands of red yeast rice ranged from 0.31 mg to 11.15 mg per capsule, according to Dr. Ram Y. Gordon, of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and colleagues.

In the body it is converted to the physiological forms, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin, leaving behind the cyanide, albeit in minimal concentration. More recently, hydroxocobalamin (a form produced by bacteria), methylcobalamin, and adenosylcobalamin can also be found in more expensive pharmacological products and food supplements. The utility of these is presently debated.
Historically, vitamin B12 was discovered from its relationship to the disease pernicious anemia, which is an autoimmune disease that destroys parietal cells in the stomach that secrete intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is crucial for the normal absorption of B12, so a lack of intrinsic factor, as seen in pernicious anemia, causes a vitamin B12 deficiency. Many other subtler kinds of vitamin B12 deficiency and their biochemical effects have since been elucidated.

The research also indicates that the PTEN tumor-suppressing gene contributes to resveratrol's anti-tumor effects in this treatment combination.
